Korea’s Most Celebrated Foreign Festival Saved by Seoul Government
- 2010 St. Patrick’s Day Festival to focus on professional performers from Ireland and recognition of Irish Korean War dead –
(Seoul, 10.03.02) With business recovering from the global economic downturn, one of Korea’s largest and most well-attended foreign festivals has received increased funding to ensure its celebration in 2010. Thanks to sponsorship and assistance from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Koreanair, Diageo Korea (Guinness), the Wolfhound, Dublin Terrace, and the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Seoul’s 10th Irish Festival – 2010 St. Patrick’s Day Festival – will go ahead as planned at Cheongyecheon Plaza on Saturday, March 20th from 1 0.m. to 6 p.m.
Attracting an estimated 18,000 attendees in 2008, the Irish Festival, organized by the Irish Association of Korea (IAK), was in danger of not going ahead last year as significant corporate sponsorship was not renewed. The traditional and colorful street parade is a costly venture, and the festival in Seoul had also traditionally been accompanied with a free open air concert and fair. Nonetheless, thanks to our loyal support from long-standing sponsors, last year’s festival successfully focused on continuing to build community spirit.
“Guess we got the rub of the green again!” joked Kevin Tobin, then Chairman of the IAK. (Editor’s note: Ireland is commonly associated with the color green and good luck, particularly in North American and the United Kingdom.) “Every year we get more and more involvement and participation from Korean and non-Irish community groups and individuals, and there is an unwritten expectation in Seoul that this event will take place.
“As a group of volunteers, both Irish and Korean, we rely on the spirit of the community and other groups to make our event a success. This is what St. Patrick’s Day is about: sharing and celebrating cultural diversity together.”
This year the Festival is returning to its prior, full glory and will feature both Irish and Korean samul nori and dance, Dongguk cheerleaders, including one brass, three Irish traditional bands, U2 cover rock ‘’n’ roll, traditional Irish music plus traditional Irish dance, featuring exhibition step dancing. The audience will once again be invited to participate in what has become a Seoul Irish Festival tradition – Irish folk dancing. There will be a full parade up and down the streets paralleling the Cheongyecheon, starting and ending at Cheongyecheon Plaza. The IAK is calling on all Koreans and members of the foreign community to participate in and support this friendship march and to celebrate Ireland’s national holiday by wearing green. The IAK will accommodate all non-profit groups wishing to follow our bagpiper in our St. Patrick’s Parade as we march up and down the Cheongyecheon stream.

- ‘Hooley’ at Dublin Terrace in Gangnam, 5 minutes from Gangnam Station, Exit 7 – from 7 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. (tickets at 50,000 won, includes free Guinness, drinks and food until 1:00 AM, discounted pricing after midnight), March 20th. Rock bands and traditional Irish pub band from Ireland, Fee & Andrea, will be featured.

St Patrick’s Day
The festival commemorates Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. It is sponsored by Ireland’s No.1 beer, Guinness, to promote the festival in Seoul alongside similar festivals in countries from Ireland to the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. People visiting Cheonggyecheon Plaza on the 20th are welcomed to enjoy traditional Irish dance and traditional music performance, and take part or support the Grand Parade by wearing green costumes.

Founded in 1996, the Irish Association of Korea promotes Irish culture in Korea by organizing events of interest to Irish people in Korea, and that are opportunities for Koreans and other people living in Korea to experience and learn more about Irish life. -2010년 성 패트릭 축제는 한국전쟁 아일랜드인 전사자를 추모합니다-
(2010년 3월 2일 서울)세계적인 경제 위기로 침체되었던 경제가 회복됨에 따라, 한국 최대의 외국 문화 축제인 성 패트릭 축제는 2010년 더 많은 예산을 확보했습니다. 서울 제 10회 성 패트릭 축제(2010년)는 일정대로 3월 20일 토요일 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 청계천 광장에서 개최되며, 서울시, 대한항공, 디아지오 코리아(기네스), 울프하운드, 더블린 테라스, 그랜드 하얏트 호텔이 후원합니다.
한국 아일랜드인 협회(IAK)에서 주최하는 성 패트릭 축제는 매년 비용이 많이 드는 아일랜드 전통 퍼레이드와 무료 야외 콘서트, 축제마당을 선보여 왔습니다. 이 행사는 2008년에는 약 18000명의 관객을 동원하였으나, 작년에는 주요 기업의 후원이 중단됨에 따라 행사 취소의 위기에 처하기도 했습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 작년에도 성공적인 행사를 치루어 공동체 의식을 함양할 수 있었던 것은 오랫동안 함께해 준 우리의 충실한 후원자들 덕분이었습니다.
“이번에도 갑자기 녹색불이 켜진 덕분에 잘 넘어갔네요!” IAK의 당시 회장이었던 케빈 토빈은 이렇게 말했습니다. (편집자 주 : 북미와 영국 등지에서 아일랜드는 종종 녹색과 행운을 연관시킨다고 합니다.) “매년 축제에 참가하는 한국인 단체와 비 아일랜드인 단체가 늘고 있습니다. 서울에서는 올해도 물론 이 축제가 열릴 것이라고 기대하고 있죠”
“우리 한국인과 아일랜드인 자원봉사자들은, 공동체 정신이 축제의 성공을 좌우한다고 생각합니다. 다양한 문화를 공유하고 기념하는 것, 바로 그것이 성 패트릭 축제의 핵심이죠.”
이전 같은 장관을 선사할 이번 행사에서는, 아일랜드인과 한국인 사물놀이패와 춤사위, 동국대 치어리더 팀과 브라스 밴드, 3팀의 아일랜드 전통음악 밴드, 한국인 밴드의 U2 rock ‘’n’ roll 공연, 아일랜드 전통음악과 스텝댄스 시연을 선보입니다. 서울 아일랜드 축제가 항상 그래왔듯이, 관객들도 포크댄스에 참여할 수 있습니다. 축제 퍼레이드는 청계천 과장에서 출발하여 길을 따라 행진 후 다시 광장으로 돌아와 종료되며, 이 아일랜드 축제와 우호의 행진을 함께 축하하고 기념하고 싶은 시민들은 녹색 옷을 입음으로써 행사에 동참할 수 있습니다.
